Sonare are thrilled to be part of the 2026-27 London Chamber Music Society's concert series, celebrating the 75th anniversary of St John's re-opening in the 1951 Festival of Britain.
The Festival of Britain was a national exhibition held from May to September 1951 to boost post-war morale and showcase British science, technology, architecture, and arts. Conceived as a "tonic to the nation" after World War II, it drew over 10 million visitors across sites in London, Glasgow, Belfast, and with touring exhibitions.
Sonare's programme reflects the original chamber choir celebrations of the church's re-opening, as well as music from earlier in the life of St John's; Samuel Wesley was the organist at the church during the 1800's, and his friend Felix Mendelssohn visiting during Wesley's tenure there. Alongside works by them both, Sonare includes a range of beautiful vocal music also from the same time period.
